DIY Playhouse Deck

Once I built the first deck it was a given that I was going to build another one. This playhouse deck was definitely the easiest project I’ve done and it added such a boho shack feel to our backyard. The main reason I built this deck was because our boys would complain about the grass touching their ankles when they played with Maevry. Honestly, I wasn’t a fan of the grass either.

LIKE ALL MY PROJECTS, THIS ONE WAS A RANDOM WEEKEND IDEA.

I started by mapping out where I wanted the deck to be with left over wood from past projects. If you haven’t realized by now, I’m an advocate for using everything we have and letting nothing go to waste.

For this, I ended up using 2x6’s so the deck would hit right at the door. We had a few already plus a random 4x6 so I only needed to purchase a couple more 2x6’s for the foundation

What we had

RANDOM WOOD

  • 4x6

  • 2x6

  • 1x4

  • 2.5 in deck screws

What I bought

MORE WOOD

  • 2x6

  • 1x4

**I didn’t put the lengths because this deck was very specific to what I needed.

From here, it was pretty simple. Once I cut all the wood to fit with the 4x6, because I was not about to try and cut through that, I just screwed all the support boards into place and filled in a few gaps with leftover wood.

THE DECKING

Once the top boards started getting laid down, it all started to come together. I used cheap 1x4’s for the top which were light and easy to drill into. The only con was that because they were cheap, I had to sand them down pretty good to avoid splinters.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES

My vision for this came to life after sanding.

  • Staining: I used honey colored stain for the top. I wanted it to match the lighter color on the deck around the pool.

  • Umbrella: I’m a sucker for fringe umbrellas so I made a hole to hold ours. This one is from Business and Pleasure.

  • Decor: Basket(Ikea), Bamboo tray (Target), Dried leaves(Nature), Beaded rope (handmade)

I love how this turned out. It really tied in the deck around our pool and now feels like a mini airbnb in Palm Springs. Which is exactly the vibe I want for our back yard!
